You may have heard skincare experts talk about the skin barrier. It is the outermost layer of your skin, made of skin cells held together by natural fats such as ceramides. Think of it as bricks and mortar. Its job is to keep moisture in and irritants out.
Signs your barrier may be stressed
- Skin feels tight, dry or rough.
- Products that were fine now sting or tingle.
- Redness or flaking appears, particularly around the nose and cheeks.
- Skin looks dull or feels unusually reactive.
These signs are not specific to the barrier and can have other causes. If they persist or worsen, see your doctor or dermatologist.
What can weaken it
- Over-cleansing, hot water and harsh scrubs.
- Using too many active products at once.
- Strong sun, wind and cold, plus dry indoor heating.
- Lack of sleep and high stress.
How to look after it
- Simplify. Cleanse gently, moisturise, use sunscreen. See our cleansing guide.
- Moisturise daily. Look for creams with ingredients like ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid. They help skin hold on to water.
- Introduce new products one at a time, and wait a week or two before adding another.
- Protect from the sun every day. See Sunscreen 101.
- Pause the extras. If your skin is reactive, take a break from strong exfoliants and massage tools until it feels calm again.
Massage and the barrier
Facial massage and tools are a gentle ritual, but they should never irritate. Use a clean tool, a facial oil for glide, and light pressure. If skin looks red or feels sore afterwards, do less, or skip it that day.
Our Skin Health from the Inside Out guide covers the lifestyle side: sleep, water, food and stress.
The takeaway: a healthy barrier is comfortable skin. When in doubt, do less and be kind.
